Macau. Nineteenth century. Stories of forbidden love that intersect in time.

Plot

On October 29, 1850, Macao was shaken by a strong explosion. In the port of Taipa where frigate D. Maria II was once anchored, coming from Goa to avenge the Chinese-led death of Governor Ferreira do Amaral, only the remains of the hull of a burning ship could be seen. On land, accompanied by few sailors, the son of commanders Francisco d'Assis e Silva survives and watches the tragedy. At just five years old, he finds himself an orphan in a strange land. In the same year, a girl of just a few months is abandoned at the Roda of Santa Casa da Mericórdia in Macau. She will receive the name of Vitória and destiny will make the two of them meet years later.

In June 2009, Wai was walled in by the rules of traditional Chinese culture, between his father's wishes and the emptiness he envisions for his future. Sofia feels trapped between Portugal, which she no longer knows, and Macau, the place where she was born, which she sees as her home despite her Portuguese ancestry. A visit to the chapel of Guia makes her discover the diary where the story of Francisco and Vitória is revealed, by which she is immediately enchanted, leading her to dream of love.

It will take more than 150 years for the lives of all these characters to cross over time. Stories made of encounters and mismatches, of forbidden loves, of loves that are not yet known to come. A book that makes us travel between Macau from the 19th century to today, ten years after Portugal abandoned the administration of the territory, making us discover a new reality unknown to most Portuguese.
